Spotlight Fashion Item: Gotta Get a Garter!

A lot of new trends are focusing on cute, flirty accessories that coordinate with your prom gown and make it that much more special. One of the hottest items out right now is the garter (fyi, a garter is a stretchy, lacey leg band that is usually worn by brides), and garters aren't just for brides anymore!

Prom garters are popping up at dances everywhere this year and are quickly becoming as popular as wearing jewelry or a sky-high pair of four inch heels.
Garters typically come in a rainbow of colors to match your dress and also come in standard black, brown, and white.

Most garters usually have a little bow with a charm or jewel in the center, but here's an idea to make your prom garter stand out even more: Use hot glue to attach a tiny charm (check your local craft store in the beading aisle) on top of the bow in the garter's center.

If you're handy with a needle and thread, miniature charms have a loop at the top where you can sew them to the garter ribbon. If you're an animal lover, you could sew on a tiny chick or dolphin charm. Do you play a musical instrument or have a creative hobby? Look for a miniature violin charm or a gold painter's palette to show off your artistic side.
Love 'Twilight'? Sew on a small, sterling silver book and mini apple charm.

Another great idea would be to attach a charm featuring your school logo or the year of your prom.

With a little creativity you can make your garter a one-of-a-kind memento that will still sparkle long after the prom is over!

Gemstone Dresses: Celebrities in Amethyst & Short Cuts

Jennifer Hudson

Many of today's celebrities are arriving on the red carpet in satin gowns that shine in rich shades of plum, violet, and amethyst.

Actress Keira Knightley shows off two different purple-hued gowns.

If you love purple but don't want a sweeping, evening style gown, these dresses may give you some inspiration...

If you're wearing a short & sweet dress that has a simple design to it, jazz it up by adding a more elaborate necklace or earrings.

Gemstone Dresses: Amethyst Evening Gowns & Accessories

Jewel-toned gowns are the hot item this year in prom wear! Because so many designers have started to create dresses with rich gemstone-like colors, you have a large selection to choose from that will make you look both fabulous and classy.

In this post, I'll share photos and information
about amethyst gowns and some style suggestions for accessories.

The great thing about amethyst is that it flatters almost any skin tone or hair color---whether you're a blonde, brunette, or even a red-head.
Amethyst is considered a 'cool' color but it has a slight rosy hue to it that gives your skin warmth and keeps you from looking washed-out.

For red-heads, any shade of purple (with the exception of lavender) goes well with auburn hair and paler skin tones.

For blondes, rosy-hued shades of purple or violet will bring out the golden undertones in your hair and skin.

For brunettes or those with dark skin tones, plum and grape are two colors that look absolutely stunning, as do any blue-toned purples.

*Here's a quick fashion tidbit*: The color purple symbolizes royalty, wealth, and nobility, perfect for the gal who likes to feel elegant and upper class!

Now for accessories! Black, white, brown, or bronze all complement an amethyst or purple gown beautifully.
If you want to wear a color that 'pops' against purple, try mustard yellow or gold. Earrings or necklaces can deliver a punch of color which would otherwise be overwhelming in a larger amount.

Colors you should absolutely avoid with purple gowns:
Dove grey (which can make your dress look dull) or red (color clash!)

Depending on the shade of your dress, both silver and gold jewelry can look good with amethyst.
